Here at LeafGuard® we would like to take a moment to share some helpful tips about your gutter downspouts. Downspouts form a connection between the roof and your homes foundation and can be very important in the protection of your home. The placement of downspouts can be crucial to prevent damage to your home’s foundation and land erosion from ground seepage and water runoff.
Here are some helpful tips for downspout placement:
First you will have to determine how many downspouts your home will need. We recommend that at least one downspout be placed per every 20 to 30 feet of gutter. This will ensure that the gutters can effectively drain to prevent overflowing gutters during heavy rain. Overflowing gutters pours onto the ground below, causing water to seep into the ground connected to the foundation wall. This can cause serious damage to your home’s foundation, flower beds, and driveway.
The pitch of your roof plays a big roll in where exactly to place your downspouts because the pitch of your roof will cause water to flow in a fixed direction. You must ensure that the pitch of the roof is considered when selecting where to place your gutter downspouts.
Another thing to keep in mind is where exactly your gutter downspouts will empty. You will want to keep water from draining near a door, crawl space, or cellar window, or wherever water can sneak inside your home. Redirecting water to a slope or hill is ideal because it will allow water to freely flow away from your home and help prevent standing water from building up around your flower beds and yard. At a minimum we recommend using “Splash Blocks” to help guide water away from the foundation. Todays building codes recommend that water should be diverted at least 10 feet away from a home’s foundation. Using downspout drains, downspout extensions, and splash blocks can all be helpful tools in your homes defense.
